Alpacas De Pachamama"Pachamama" is the Peruvian Quechua and Aymara Indians' word for Mother Earth. Ausengate is a magnificent snow-covered peak south of Cuzco and the legendary source of alpacas and llamas. According to legend, Pachamama loaned alpacas and llamas so the people of the puna could survive. Since the animals belong to Pachamama, they must be well-fed and never treated cruelly. If they aren't, Pachamama will call them back to Ausengate and people will disappear. Ancient Quechua legend. WHO WE ARE, OUR FARM AND OUR SERVICESTopics on this page (click to jump down): How We Got StartedAlpacas de Pachamama is on four acres of lush, green grass in the Payette River valley between Boise, Idaho, and the Oregon border. We are originally from Northern California but have been in Idaho for 20 years. My history with alpacas started in the late 60's in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains, near San Francisco. As part of the alternative generation and the back to the earth movement I wore alpaca clothing which could be purchased in health food stores and other alternative stores which carried alpaca as an earth-friendly product. Alpaca fiber needs no harsh chemicals to process and comes in many natural, warm, earth-tone colors eliminating chemical dyes. Alpaca even now can be found in many health back-to-the-earth type stores. I saw my first alpaca on the Johnny Carson show around 1985. I was excited to see the animal my clothing came from and could not believe how beautiful alpacas are! In 1995, I saw an ad in a magazine from the Alpaca Owners and Breeders Association, sent for some literature and was HOOKED! We bought our first alpaca a few months later and boarded him on the farm where I bought him, paying for his board with herd help on the weekend. This was a tremendous way to learn about herd management as I helped my friend with toenail clipping, giving injections and shearing. I joined the Alpaca Owners and Breeders Association (AOBA) then spent the entire next year reading everything I could find on alpacas, not hard to do as they have been in this country since only 1984 and AOBA has a library of almost everything published in this country available to members free of charge! (Click here for AOBA's library pages.) I read all the books, all the old magazines, watched videos, searched the Internet and since then have never stopped educating myself on everything alpaca. A year later we made our move to the country, bought alpacas and never looked back! I quit my job, but my husband Bernie still has a day job which he can't wait to get home from every day to unstress with the alpacas. What an exciting life style change! Being animal lovers in general, we now have dogs, barn cats, house cats, a few pygmy goats, a pig, a horse, a couple donkeys, doves for the soft cooing, chickens for the eggs and guinea fowl to eat ticks and mosquitoes.
Our PhilosophyStarting with physically sound animals of good bloodlines, our emphasis has always been breeding for the finest fiber possible which will be the basis for the long term future of the alpaca in this country. We also never lose sight of the fact that these fine fibered animals must be on a solid foundation of good conformation, good health, good legs and strong reproductive abilities. We firmly believe in our Owner's and Breeders Association and the Alpaca Registry - all of our alpacas are ARI registered.
